Healthy brain: everyday habits and the nutrients that matter

Dos adultos juegan al ajedrez para tener un cerebro sano.

Equipo Editorial Hifas |

How can we look after our brain as the years go by? Research on so-called 'super-agers' – people in their eighties whose memory performs like that of people decades younger – found that they tended to be physically and socially active, positive, and keen to keep learning.

Everyday habits for a healthy brain

  • Sleep: regular, good-quality sleep supports concentration, mood and learning.
  • Focus: constant notifications and multitasking make it harder to concentrate. Try single-tasking and short periods of mindfulness or slow breathing.
  • Move: regular physical activity is good for the whole body, including the brain.
  • Stay social and keep learning: new skills, hobbies and conversations all count.
  • Look after your hearing, blood pressure and general health – the NHS recommends regular check-ups as you get older.
  • Eat a balanced diet and limit alcohol; don't smoke.

Nutrients for the brain

Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) contributes to normal mental performance. Zinc and iodine contribute to normal cognitive function. Iron contributes to normal cognitive function. Vitamins B6 and B12 and folate contribute to normal psychological function, and vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B12 contribute to the normal functioning of the nervous system.

Lion's Mane

Lion's Mane (Hericium erinaceus) has a long history of use in Asian tradition and contains characteristic compounds called hericenones and erinacines, which scientists are studying. There are no authorised health claims for Lion's Mane itself.

Our Hifas-Neuro combines Lion's Mane and Chaga with Ginkgo, Rhodiola, phosphatidylserine (from soya) and vitamins. Pantothenic acid contributes to normal mental performance, and vitamins B5, B6 and B12 contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism.

When to seek advice

If you or someone close to you is worried about memory or concentration, speak to your GP.
