When you buy a mushroom supplement – Reishi, for example – you probably assume you are getting a quality natural product. But there are many ways to make Reishi capsules, and the word 'natural' on a label does not guarantee quality.
What studies have found
A 2017 study in Scientific Reports found that only 5 of 19 supplements sold as Reishi contained the beta-glucans characteristic of the mushroom. Choosing a transparent, trusted brand matters.
Additives: what are they for?
- Fillers add bulk, but not mushroom content.
- Binders hold ingredients together; they can be used safely in the necessary amounts.
- Anti-caking agents help powders flow during encapsulation.
- Preservatives, colourings and flavourings are not always needed in capsules.
All additives must be listed on the label, so read the ingredient list carefully.
How to choose
- Check the species, part used and extraction method.
- Look for quantified characteristic compounds, such as beta-glucans.
- Look for organic certification and batch testing for contaminants.
- Prefer brands that publish their analyses.
Our approach
We use natural mushroom extracts in plant-based capsules and keep additives to a minimum – every one is listed on the label. Learn more on our quality page.
