Calcium, vitamin D and bones: nutrients and habits that matter

Absorción de calcio y setas de la medicina tradicional: cómo apoyar la salud ósea desde el intestino

Marta Hifas da Terra |

Bones, nutrients and lifestyle

When we think about bones, calcium and vitamin D usually take centre stage – and for good reason. Calcium is needed for the maintenance of normal bones, and vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and to the maintenance of normal bones. Other nutrients play a part too: magnesium, vitamin K and protein all contribute to the maintenance of normal bones.

Why lifestyle matters

  • Weight-bearing and strength etraining – walking, dancing, resistance training – is one of the best ways for keeping bones strong.
  • Have a varied diet with calcium-rich foods: dairy or fortified alternatives, tinned fish with bones, green leafy vegetables, tofu set with calcium, nuts and seeds.
  • Vitamin D: in the UK, public health guidance suggests considering a 10 µg daily vitamin D supplement from October to March.
  • Limit alcohol and don't smoke.

The gut and nutrient absorption

Researchers are increasingly interested in how the gut microbiota and dietary fibre relate to the absorption of minerals – sometimes described as the 'gut–bone axis'. This is an emerging field of research, much of it still in the laboratory.

Mushrooms as part of a balanced diet

Mushrooms are a source of fibre, including beta-glucans, and some mushrooms exposed to UV light contain vitamin D2.

Our products with vitamin D

Our CocoVit D+K2 drops and Hifas-Menopause contain vitamin D, which contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and to the maintenance of normal bones.

If you have concerns about your bone health, speak to your GP. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
