Why perimenopause can leave you more tired
Tiredness is one of the most common experiences during the transition to menopause. Fluctuating oestradiol and progesterone can affect sleep, mood and temperature regulation.
For an overview of this stage of life, see our complete guide to perimenopause.
Broken sleep
In the SWAN study, the proportion of women waking several times a night on at least three nights a week rose from 24% before menopause to 40% after the final period. Even seven or eight hours in bed may not feel restful if sleep is fragmented.
Heavy periods and iron
Heavier or more frequent periods are common during perimenopause and can lower iron levels. If your periods are very heavy, speak to your GP – they can check your iron levels with a simple blood test.
Other causes worth checking
Tiredness has many possible causes, including thyroid problems, low vitamin B12 or iron, sleep problems, stress and some medicines. If tiredness lasts several weeks, gets worse or limits your daily life, see your GP so that they can assess the cause.
Everyday habits that help
- Keep regular sleep and wake times, and get morning daylight.
- Move every day – even a brisk walk helps.
- Eat regular, balanced meals with iron-rich foods (pulses, red meat, leafy greens) and vitamin C-rich fruit and vegetables.
- Drink water regularly and limit alcohol.
Nutrients that contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
Vitamins B6 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue as well as regulation of hormonal activity and normal psychological function.
Functional mushrooms
Cordyceps, Reishi and Lion's Mane have a long history of use in Tibetan, Chinese and Japanese tradition. There are no authorised health claims for mushrooms themselves.
Hifas-Menopause
Hifas-Menopause is a hormone-free food supplement that combines organic Reishi, Lion's Mane and Cordyceps sinensis with Ashwagandha root extract, green tea extract, live cultures, vitamins B6 and D and zinc. Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity and to normal psychological function. If you are taking any medication, are under medical supervision or have a hormone-sensitive condition, please speak to your doctor before taking any food supplement. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
