What is vaginal dryness?
Vaginal dryness is still a taboo subject, yet it is very common – especially around the menopause, though it can happen at any age. It occurs when natural moisture decreases, often because of hormonal changes.
Common causes
- Hormonal changes – perimenopause, menopause, pregnancy, breastfeeding or hormonal contraception.
- Some medicines.
- Stress and lack of sleep.
- Intimate hygiene – harsh or perfumed products, or washing too often.
When to speak to your GP
If you have persistent dryness, itching, burning, discomfort during sex, unusual discharge or bleeding, speak to your GP, practice nurse or a sexual health clinic. These symptoms can have different causes and treatments are available – the NHS and the British Menopause Society have helpful information.
Everyday care
- Wash the external intimate area gently with water or a mild, fragrance-free, pH-balanced wash, and pat dry.
- Avoid douches, intimate sprays, perfumed products and bubble baths.
- Wear breathable cotton underwear.
- Drink enough water and eat a balanced diet.
- Look after sleep and stress levels, and stay active.
